The bitter-tasting bark
is a digestive tonic. It is also used to treat sore throats. The root is used
as a cathartic for treating worms and as a medicine for treating lymphatic
disorders.

Key botanical characters:
Deciduous
trees; branches slender. Leaves simple, alternate, spiral; lamina oblong-elliptic,
lanceolate, or linear-lanceolate, obtuse at base, acute at apex, serrate or
rarely crenate along margins, chartaceous. Inflorescences many-flowered,
monochasial; sepals 5, turning dark red, ovate to ovate-oblong; petals 6,
obovate, tapering at base; torus swollen; stamens 30-60; filaments 3-6 mm
long, unequal, persistent, filiform; carpels 5-10; style 10-15 mm long;
stigma branched. Fruits 2-5.
