Key botanical characters:

Rhizomatous herb 1-1.5 m tall.  Rhizome light green inside.  Leafy shoot 1-1.5 m tall, cylindrical, branching not common,  Leaves spirally arranged on the stem, shortly petiolate, petiole 1.5 cm long, glabrous, purple; lamina ovate-elliptic, 26-30 x 11-14 cm, dark green above, deep purple below, upper and lower surface glabrous, shining.  Inflorescence terminal, c. 10 x 7 cm, ovoid, red.  Bracts numerous, Flower 8-9 x 4-5 cm, dull white.
