Uses
:
Wood used construction, posts, railway sleepers, furniture and agricultural implements. Roots used in folk medicine.
Key botanical characters:
Large evergreen trees; up to 30 m high; bark thick, grey to brown, rough; leaves simple, opposite, estipulate. Flowers bisexual, yellowish-white, fragrant, in axillary and terminal panicles. Sepals 5, long, ovate, puberulous without. Petals 5, elliptic to obovate. Stamens numerous, free or slightly connate; anthers 3, erect. Ovary 1-2 mm, bilocular; ovules 2 in each locule; styles 2, subulate. Fruit a capsule, globose, beaked, pink, 1-celled; seed one, fleshy.
