Key botanical characters :
Branching shrubs to 5 m tall. Leaves bipinnate; rachis 20-30 cm long; pinnae 4-8 pairs; leaflets 6-8 pairs on each pinna, elliptic to obovate, base cuneate, apex rounded or emarginate; stipules 2 mm long, subulate, caducous. Flowers in terminal corymbose racemes, 20-50 cm long. Calyx outer lobe cucullate, enclosing the flower bud. Petals subequal, commonly flame-red but sometimes yellow. Stamens 10; filaments reddish, 0.5 cm long, exserted. Pods obliquely oblong, compressed, short-stipitate, beaked at apex, 8-10-seeded. Seeds obovate, compressed, black.
