Leaves all  opposite  , elliptic or  ovate - oblong  obtuse  crenulate  , flowers  large  sessile  in the axils  of  opposite  or alternate leafy bracts forming  terminal  and axillary sessile or  peduncled  spikes  , calyx - lobes  ovate acuminate  , fruiting  membranous  not striate.
