It is used
to treat coughs. In Sudan and Nigeria a special form of C. digitatus is used
to prepare a perfume.

Key
botanical Charcters
:
Erect, tufted, shortly, rhizomatousperennials; culms 30-65 cm tall,
triquetrous above, trigonous below. Leaves basal, 15-45 x0.5-1 cm, linear,
acute, flat, scabrid on margins; sheaths upto 20 cm long, purple
coloured.Inflorescence compound or decompound; leafy bracts 4-8, the longer
ones upto 45 cm long;primary rays 4 to 10, unequal. Spikelets 6-10 x 1-1.5
mm, linear, weakly flattened, straw-coloured. Glumes 1.5-2 mm long, narrowly
elliptic, keeled on back, pale straw-coloured.Stamens 3. Stigmas 3. Nut c. 1
x 0.5 mm, oblong-elliptic, trigonous, apiculate, greyish-brown, minutely
puncticulate.
