Uses

The sap of the inflorescence can be used for making sugar. An edible starch can be obtained from the trunk. It is made into a flour and used for making bread
Key botanical characters : 
Monocarpic palms; stem solitary, dark grey with distinct leaf scars. Leaves costa palmate, orbicular, 3-8 m in diameter, cleft to the middle into 80-100, bifid lobes, leaf base split into two halves; petiole about 3 m long, massive, margins with well defined teeth. Inflorescence terminal, about 6 m long; primary flower branches arise horizontally from the main axis; ultimate flower branches (rachillae) 12-40 cm long, white, smooth. Flowers bisexual, arranged in clusters of 3-6 flowers. Fruit globose, 3 cm in diameter. Seeds smooth and very hard.
